Once summer officially hits, picnics and barbecues are everywhere! It's a great time for delicious food and summer sun, but that can wreak havoc on your clean eating streak, which leads to expanding waistlines and less-than-flattering swimsuits.
Curb those tenacious summer appetites by keeping your cool next to the summer spread. Here are a few summer tips to help you battle the BBQ pit and eat right all summer long.
1. Just keep blending!
If you're having your NutriBlast smoothie daily, you're already ahead of the game. If you're not, get to it! Having at least one nutritious smoothie each day, preferably for breakfast, helps get in your daily recommended amount of vitamins and minerals and helps keep you full throughout the day. Filled with vegetables, leafy greens, and naturally sweet fruit, you're filling up on fiber, which helps curb cravings and sets you on a path of healthy eating. When you have your fill of fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables first thing in the morning, you're less inclined to grab the heavier party foods that might surround you later in the day.
2. Bring your own shared dish to the barbecue.
No, we don't mean bring a plate of meatless meat to join the ribs and burgers on the grill — unless your friends are cool with it! No, we're talking about fresh, delightful party treats that just happen to be healthy, as well. Things like a hummus and veggie platter, a fruit salad, a cabbage slaw, or a brown rice plate topped with avocado and diced cashews. These are simple dishes that provide a healthy alternative to the mayo-drenched potato salads of yesteryear. When you bring these, you can rest assured knowing you'll have something to munch on that won't drastically increase your calorie or unhealthy fat intake.
Not sure what to bring? Dice up some watermelon and douse it in lime for a delicious fruit bowl that everyone will love.
3. Don't stop working out.
When you eat foods that aren't necessarily good for you, the motivation to maintain other healthy lifestyle habits, like meditation, yoga, or working out, can wane. But don't let it! Even though one healthy habit won't cancel out an entire cheat day, working out can keep you more motivated in the long run, and seeing how much you sweat, burn, and ache during a tough workout can be just the thing you need to put you back on track.
Plus, the weather is beautiful! Go for a run outside, hit the beach for some volleyball, or visit your local park for a fun spin on your typical workout. If it's too hot outside, the gym will be nice and chilly — no excuses!
Most of all, summer is a time for laughter, family, and friends. This 4th of July, celebrate it lean and clean! You never know, your healthy habits might just end up rubbing off on those around you!
