NutriBullet “Fails” and Fixes

Have you ever tried making a smoothie for your family only to hear some ewwwww’s and yuck’s? I certainly have. It’s only natural to make some unpleasant-tasting smoothies along the way to better health, especially if you’re new to the NutriBullet. I’d like to think of these NutriBullet “fails” as little bloopers and blunders that we can all laugh about and learn from. I’ve asked my clients to share some of their NutriBullet “fails,” along with tricks to create a delicious and nutritious smoothie!

Fail: Beet Root Smoothie

Beets are high in essential nutrients, but they have a very strong flavor. When making a smoothie, they need to be used in moderation or else your drink will taste very earthy. While some people like this, others simply want to spit it out! To avoid this beetroot blunder, make sure to balance its flavor with the natural sweetness of fruits, such as berries, bananas, grapes, mangoes, or apples. You’ll be glad you did!

Fail: Arugula Smoothie

Green leafy vegetables are daily must-haves in a healthy and balanced diet! They contain numerous vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body needs. Arugula happens to be one of my favorite leafy greens. It’s a perfect addition to salads, soups, and sandwiches! It does, however, have a slightly bitter taste so it shouldn’t be the main ingredient in a smoothie. I’ve learned that adding almond milk to an arugula-based smoothie can lessen the bitter flavor of this nutritious vegetable and make it more enjoyable to sip on.

Fail: Very Berry Smoothie

Berries are amazing additions to a high antioxidant diet. They have many health benefits, including improved sports performance, cholesterol management, and weight loss. However, berries have very short shelf-lives. Because of their large surface areas and many groves and crevices, they’re the perfect hosts for fast-growing mold. This is more of a public service announcement: inspect your berries before blending! My favorite very berry smoothie, which contains a delicious mix of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, was not very well accepted by myself nor my kids when a few of those berries fell prey to mold. Yuck!
